Use case
Manage CPG Food Compliance
The problem
Food compliance is non-negotiable but wildly time-consuming for small brands. You need FDA-compliant Nutrition Facts labels, allergen declarations, FSMA 204 lot-level traceability, and the ability to run a mock recall in hours (not days) for your next SQF or retailer audit. Most brands manage this in spreadsheets and binders, or pay $300/hour to a labeling consultant every time they reformulate. One mistake can mean a recall, a failed audit, or a retailer pulling your product.
How Starch solves it
Starch combines FDA Compliance & Labeling (for labels, allergens, and regulatory monitoring) with Lot Tracker (for FSMA 204 traceability and mock recalls) into a compliance layer purpose-built for small food brands. Generate compliant labels from your recipes, track every lot from supplier to shelf, and run a mock recall in 30 minutes instead of 3 days. Always audit-ready without a dedicated compliance hire.
How it works
Prepare for a food safety audit
- 1Open Lot Tracker and verify that all active lots have complete one-up-one-down traceability (supplier lots linked to finished goods, finished goods linked to customer shipments).
- 2Run a mock recall on a random lot to confirm you can trace it end-to-end in under 30 minutes.
- 3Open FDA Compliance and verify that all active SKU labels are current — no pending regulatory updates or expired declarations.
- 4Check FSMA 204 Key Data Elements for completeness across your portfolio.
- 5Export audit-ready documentation for the auditor — SQF, BRC, or retailer-specific formats.

Frequently asked questions
Do I really need FSMA 204 compliance?
If you manufacture, process, or distribute food in the US, almost certainly yes. FSMA 204 requires one-up-one-down traceability records with specific Key Data Elements for foods on the FDA's Food Traceability List. Most fresh, frozen, and minimally processed foods are on the list. Check the FDA's FTL to see if your products are covered.
Can Starch generate print-ready labels?
It generates the compliant text content — Nutrition Facts panel, ingredient statement, allergen declarations, bioengineered food disclosures. You drop that text into your label design in Illustrator or Canva. It's not a graphic design tool, but the output is formatted for clean paste-in.
How fast can I run a mock recall?
Under 30 minutes. Enter the lot number or production date, and Lot Tracker shows every supplier lot, every production batch, and every customer shipment connected to it. Most auditors expect under 4 hours — you'll have the answer before they finish their coffee.
